Reduce your electric bill by reducing air leakage - Part 2.
Once you've properly caulked all the windows in your house, the next step to saving money is installing weatherstripping.
Weatherstripping prevents air leakage that occurs in and around movable window parts.
Weatherstipping must completely seal off gaps between window parts to be effective. It should be flexible and should not impede the opening or closing or your windows.
The following is a list of the different types of weatherstripping available at most hardware stores: vinyl v-seal weather strip, bronze weather strip, sponge rubber neoprene-coated strip, aluminum strip, felt strip, air conditioner weather strip, and self-adhesive foam tape.
Make sure you clean and allow proper drying time for any surface you plan to use adhesive for attaching weather strips.
Also be sure you that all weather strips are cut to the exact size needed for each place you install them. Even a 1/8th inch gap between weather strips and the adjoining corner could cost you upwards of 15% on your next gas or electric bill.
