Reduce your electric bill by reducing air leakage - Part 1.

Many windows have tiny gaps in and around the frame which allow air to leak in or outside your house. This transfer of air means either your heater or air conditioner must work harder to keep your house at the constant temperature you have selected on the thermostat.

Fortunately there are some very inexpensive ways to reduce this transfer of air and thus reduce your monthly electric and gas bill.

Applying caulking to gaps in and around window frames and joints will greatly reduce the amount of air that leaks out of your windows. Caulking is inexpensive to buy and easy to apply.

1. Keep in mind that before applying new caulk to any area of a window you must remove any old caulk or paint from the surface. Putty knives, stiff-bristle brushes and solvents make great tools for this chore.

2. Also remember to caulk your windows when the temperature is moderate. Caulking in hot or cold weather could cause the caulk to not stick properly or to fail prematurely.

3. Do not caulk over wet surfaces, most caulk needs a dry surface to bond properly.

4. Remember to caulk both the interior and the exterior side of windows.

5. Allow the proper amount of time for the caulk to dry, see the caulk container for the manufacture's recommended dry time, before painting over newly caulked surfaces.
